AVENTURA, Fla. — Sometimes it takes a while to discover where you’re truly meant to be in the world. Kristen Goodman, director of sales and marketing for Aventura Worldwide Transportation Service, worked in sales and marketing for over 12 years in the finance industry.

But before she got involved there, she spent 18 months in the Peace Corps as a volunteer in Ethiopia, which taught her techniques that came in handy when helping clients.

Experience Of A Lifetime

Goodman graduated from college with degrees in sports marketing and journalism, and first wanted to be a sports reporter. However, after graduating, she realized she was at a place in her life where she wasn’t sure where she belonged. This led her to join the Peace Corps. She thought it would be an amazing experience, and it certainly lived up to her expectations.

Her job was to educate people with and without the HIV virus to prevent its spread. She participated with a group of 40 other people and learned the language and culture. “It really contributed a lot to me being able to teach and train others and help fulfill the needs of people. I believe it’s played a big role in my success in sales,” she says.

When she entered the world of finance, she was responsible for growing accounts, maintaining relationships, and earning new business. “The challenges of sales have also shaped me, but I love giving clients what they deserve. Every client is a VIP, and that’s the idea Aventura represents.”

She also notes women tend to exude a calm, gentle demeanor which helps with growing bonds of trust with potential clients. “We also don’t take no for an answer and are tenacious, which is great for the role of sales.”

Her primary focus in her new role at Aventura will be to provide account management to current portfolios, manage the company’s social media outlets, develop marketing and brand strategies, and go after new business not only in south Florida but nationally in the form of affiliate work as well.

Living Up To Expectations

Goodman is excited to work with her father and company owner, Neil Goodman. “This has been a long time coming,” she says. “Everything that has gone on in the last few years have all led to this moment.” She will also be working very closely with her stepbrother, Scott Tinkler, stepsister in-law, Kristina Tinkler, and stepmother, Toni Goodman.

“We all have very significant roles that are large components in keeping the company successful. I love being closer to my family and having more face-to-face time with them.”

She notes all jobs are stressful and admits it’s difficult to see her father occasionally stressed. “I’m here because I want to take that pressure away.” One of the hard parts of working with family is not wanting to let any of them down; a fear many young operators helping in the family business share. It’s one thing when you work under someone, but another entirely when the boss is your father.

Goodman doesn’t let that fear deter her, however. In fact, she says she’s never been more passionate about anything in her career.

Looking Forward

In the coming year, she plans to develop short, mid, and long-term goals, grow current business, attract new clients, and spread Aventura’s longstanding name further into the industry.

She’s breathing new life into the company’s social media pages. Her goal is to post a new and informative message every other day. She’s also started a new Instagram page for the brand. This will get information to friends and family, which helps since the biggest source of new clients comes from referrals. “The more people know about us, the more other people will find out about us. It’s built into your everyday experience, so it doesn’t feel like advertising.”

Goodman says the business has faced many challenges over the last few years, but she’s proud to be part of something still standing in the industry. “When we hit rock bottom, instead of closing the doors, we were even more resilient. Now we have the strength and ability to not only be successful, but bigger and better than before.”
