Virginia Operator Adds Berkshire Coach Van

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — Paul Walsh has successfully run a small fleet of three sedans, two SUVs, and a van for 20 years serving a mostly corporate clientele.

In late June, Walsh, the owner of Superior Executive Transportation, leased a 2019 Berkshire Coach Ultra 24, a 14-passenger minibus-style van. The new vehicle shows how a small-fleet operator can find added revenue in the growing market for luxury-based small group transportation.

“I’m not a bus guy,” said Walsh, a 2019 LCT Operator of the Year Award winner. “I needed a 14-passenger van with luggage and this fit the bill with everything I’m looking for, from corporate to retail.”

Walsh said he chose the Berkshire Ultra 24 because of the overall value of its luxury-level amenities and style. He previously had run a Turtle Top Vanterra.

“Economically, it’s priced very well,” he said. “It has a lot of the features some of the bigger names in the industry offer on buses that are more expensive.” Among the amenities included are a forward-facing picture window, USB ports for every seat, overhead storage, a rear luggage compartment, and plenty of legroom.

“It’s a well put together, very sound vehicle,” said Walsh, who is also president of the Virginia Limousine Association. “One of my chauffeurs drove it for the first time and called me and said it drives like a Cadillac. The ride is smooth and it doesn’t rattle.”

Walsh leased the bus/van from VLA member Sonny Merryman Inc., a Virginia-based dealer of commercial, transit, school, church and specialized buses and vans with sales and service centers in Chesapeake, Bristow, Evington, and Ashland. “We have a VLA member right here in our area who can easily service it and that made sense.”

Superior Executive Transportation will use the Berkshire Ultra 24 mostly for road show clients, property tours, group airport transfers, and groups traveling to and from the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Walsh find the minibus-style luxury van the perfect complement to his three Cadillac XTS sedans and two Cadillac Escalade SUVs.

Berkshire Coach is the luxury transportation division of Forest River, a commercial bus, truck, trailer, and RV manufacturer based in Elkhart, Ind., and owned by Berkshire Hathaway.
