Electric brake pad wear sensors consist of a conductive metal loop embedded in the brake pad. The loop transmits a small current when the car is in motion. When the brake pad wears down, it exposes the metal loop so it comes into direct contact with the brake rotor. This triggers a dashboard light which alerts the driver that the brake pads need to be replaced. Some sensor designs feature two loops at different depths of the tread, enabling the vehicle’s technology to determine just how much wear the brake pad has left on it.
