NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. — Made in U.S.A. That’s what the badge inside the door of the new Mercedes-Benz Sprinter reads on models sold in North America beginning in 2019. Sept. 5 marked the opening of the newly expanded Sprinter manufacturing plant in North Charleston, S.C., which since 2006 had been reassembling partially disassembled ‘semi-knockdown’ vans imported from Germany. This semi-knockdown process circumvents a 25% tariff on trucks imported from Europe, as does manufacturing them within the country.
