Mercedes S-Class and Audi A8: Revamped Chauffeur Favorites

Posted on January 27, 2014

LONDON, UK — The S is Mercedes’ flagship saloon and has a history of tech breakthroughs. The latest generation’s new equipment includes Road Surface Scan, which uses a twin-lens camera on top of the windscreen to monitor the road up to 15m ahead and allows the car to create a precise image of what’s coming up. A chauffeur was included during the test review as most people will be driven in this limo-like vehicle, so the experience is aimed at the rear seat.

For the Audi A8, the company’s latest model re-establishes the brand as a forerunner for luxury class and sophistication. The long wheelbase version is fitted with a 6.3-litre W12 petrol engine producing 493bhp, that has a special de-activator unit that shutters six of the 12 cylinders during low speeds for greater fuel efficiencies.

The navigation screen is linked to Google Earth, so when you’re in a tunnel, for example, you see the land above. A camera also captures speed-limit signs and displays them on the instrument panel, while a heads-up display projects speed, directions and warnings so you don’t have to take your eyes off the road.
