VLA Sways State to Keep Uber from Gaining Advantage

In an effort to keep Uber from gaining unfair competitive inroads into Virginia, members of the Virginia Limousine Association (VLA) took action Jan. 20 that helped postpone any Uber-backed favorable changes to the state’s current transportation regulations.

Led by VLA President Glenn Stafford (Love Limousine), Betty Callahan (Bay Breeze Limousine), Paul Walsh ( Superior Executive Transportation) and Stephen Story (James River Transportation), the team met with state legislators to make the case that making any changes in regulations that favored Uber was not in the best interest of limousine operators, or public safety.

Stafford told LCT Magazine that Uber requested some minor changes to regulations that would have helped them get a “foot in the door” but after meeting with legislators, the state House Transportation Committee decided to delay any decision on proposed bills till next year.

“We worked together with taxi coalitions on this and our aim is that Uber needs to work under the same regulations as everybody else,” added Stafford. “So now at a minimum at least the DMV is looking to make them at least get a broker license and the DMV will enforce the current laws. We’re looking to make it a level playing field and maintain the public safety regarding licensing and insurance” he added.

    Great work, VLA. We are beginning to feel the impact of Lyft & Uber here, in Nashville. They spent much of 2013 employing paid lobbyists to influence our city council, mayor's office, etc. While Nashville does have exisiting regulation in place, Lyft is clearly running afoul. Unfortunately, the taxi & limo industry here is having to play catch-up.
