Self-Driving Cars Race To Reach Consumers

NEW YORK CITY — As Google continues to invest in self-driving cars, regulatory agencies work to understand the technology and the different levels of autonomous vehicles. MIT’s John Leonard explains the different degrees of car autonomy recognized from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration:

Level 0 — Non-automation: Driver in control of vehicle

Level 1 — Function-specific automation: Examples: Electronic stability control, pre-charged brakes

Level 2 — Combined function automation: Examples: Adaptive cruise control _ lane centering

Level 3 — Limited self-driving automation: Driver can cede control of safety functions

Level 4 — Full self-driving automation: Vehicle can perform all safety functions and monitor roadway
