ACTON, Mass. — 2012 is shaping up to be a historic year of vehicle milestones for the industry as new Lincoln and Cadillac models roll out and old ones are sold off.

Acton Fleet Sales, the leading national seller of Lincoln limousine vehicles, moved its last Lincoln Town Car Executive L — the predominant livery vehicle for two decades — off of its lot on Saturday, Aug. 4. The sedan was trucked to its new owner, Abraham Limousine Service in Las Vegas.

The Town Car belonged to the last batch of 2011 MY Lincoln Town Car Executive L sedans sent to Acton by Lincoln. Ford Motor Co. officially retired the Town Car last year and debuted its livery successor, the cross-over styled 2013 Lincoln MKT Town Car.

Altogether, Acton sold 26,000 Lincoln Town Cars to the chauffeured transportation industry, generating more than $1 billion in sales, said Cunningham, who has been selling limo vehicles for 25 years.

When Acton started advertising its last set of 65 Town Cars in early July, the reaction was instant.

“What a month; we started with an e-blast that was sent to more than 20,000 operators,” said Bill Cunningham, general manager of Acton Fleet Sales. “Once the e -blast was sent, our phones began ringing off of the hook. We are still getting calls looking for the old favorite Town Car. It was incredible. In less than one month, we were completely sold out.”

With the Town Car gone, Acton can focus full-time on selling the MKT Town Car and the Chrysler 300 Limited sedan, a newcomer dark-horse that is unexpectedly grabbing a large initial market share of limo sedan sales. Acton will display the MKT Town Car and Chrysler 300 next month at annual vehicle expos being held by the New England Livery Association and the Greater California Livery Association.

Cunningham attributes brisk 300 sedan sales to several factors:

  • The 300 is a rear wheel drive sedan
  • It has a 6 cylinder engine with an 8-speed automatic transmission.
  • It gets 31-plus miles to the gallon highway which will save an operator $3,545 in gas costs per year if the car is driven 60,000 miles.
  • The 300 comes equipped with factory chrome wheels, leather seating, heated front seats, reverse back up camera, Alpine stereo, and leather wrapped steering wheel and much more.
  • It costs about $13,000 less than the Lincoln MKT Town Car and Cadillac XTS sedan.
  • The Chrysler warranty covers 800 components.

    Here's my $.02 The town car was originally going to be replaced in the 1980s by the Taurus based Continental. At that time, the push was to go FWD (Taurus/Continental/Probe) but due to initial sentiment with the public and within Ford, the old RWD stayed. More recently, the Town Car was to die in 2007. It received a stay of execution when it was discovered the Lincoln version of the then Ford 500 had a useless trunk opening. It was a major screwup. Ford then scrambled to put together the MKT TownCar, which is a decent option. Ironically, they finally fixed the trunk on the MKS, but are now limiting it's appeal as a limo by withdrawing it from the approved commercial vehicle list. The fact is the Crown Vic/Town Car are OLD. They really don't ride over sharp bumps well, and they are inefficient. All of the current V-6s offer better power, while giving better MPG. Go read the Motor Trend article on the police car options and you'll see that they love the fact that the Crown Vic is gone. The big mistake is no one has a long enough version available. I think that there will be a totally different list of options in three years...and we will see better choices then. It's just gonna suck until then.
