ST. LOUIS, MO — August was a month for high financial and fiscal drama, but at Best Transportation of St. Louis, revenues reached the highest monthly level in the history of the company.

Revenues were up 19% YOY compared to August 2010. A pattern of such revenue growth earned the company a 1,914 ranking out of 5,000 on the Inc. 5000 list for its 135% increase in revenue in the 2007-2010 period. The company’s 2011 revenue projection stands at just above $5 million, a 17-18% increase compared to 2010.

BEST Transportation owes most of its growth to buses and vans of all sizes in recent years. It operates 11 mini-coaches, two motorcoaches, and several limo party buses as well as a fleet of shared-ride vans for its separately branded GO Airport shuttle service.

Altogether, buses of all types account for 60% of BEST’s annual revenues. Since the company won the 2011 LCT Operator of The Year Award in the 31-50 vehicles category in February, it has grown to 56 fleet vehicles, placing it into the industry’s largest fleet category defined as 51 vehicles or more.

Another 20% of its revenues come from the airport shuttle service, while the remaining 20% is related to traditional chauffeured vehicles such as sedans, SUVs, and stretch limousines.

In an interview with LCT, President Kim Garner and sales and marketing director Joe Bryan credited the Inc. 5000 achievement to bus service coupled with intense sales efforts.

“The core members of our team have been here at least four years,” Bryan said. “That consistency is a big thing. The real bulk of our hotel business comes from the sales team. In working with large groups, we try to figure out [specific] transportation for a group. We can be transportation experts.”

Garner said, “When we added a shared ride division, because we are offering different types of services, we can get other business from hotels. They are using us for shared rides as well as the BEST transportation side. It has strengthened our relationships with hotels.”

Buying motorcoaches was a natural evolutions from one-stop-shop mini-bus, limo bus, and van services. BEST operates two motorcoaches, — a 55-passenger Prevost and a 57-passenger Neoplan — which are proving to be busier than expected.

“The sales team was riding me about getting motorcoaches, so we bought one two years ago as a test,” Garner said. “We bought a used one just for local [trips], and had to get one that made sense for profits. The bus did well, and someone presented us with another one. Even with two motorcoahces, we still sill have to farm out work with a local company because we have that much demand.”

Bryan added, “Once we had one of our own, our clients were more open to giving us business. There’s a big difference in saying you own at least one. It creates the perception that we understand the business. You get more business because they know we know the business.”
