More details emerge on a New Orleans-based operation's conversion of 20 Lincoln Town Cars to propane fuel.

NEW ORLEANS — A local limousine company will convert 20 of its vehicles to propane gas and will use a federal grant to pay for the work.

Limousine Livery, based in the Lower Garden District, is taking part in the Southeast Propane Autogas Development Program. Using money from the U.S. Department of Energy, the program’s goal is to put 1,000 autogas vehicles on the road and establish more than 25 autogas fueling stations. It’s being implemented through public and private partnerships in nine Southeast U.S. states and Washington, D.C., over a four-year period.

Grant money will cover the $160,000 cost for Limousine Livery to convert 20 Lincoln Town Cars in its fleet. They will use a filling station being built at nearby Second Line Stages, an entertainment production facility where management has prioritized sustainable practices such as using biodiesel, recycling and using energy efficient products.

Limousine Livery was the only Louisiana company chosen to take part in the Southeast Propane Autogas Development Program.

Autogas is the common term applied to liquefied petroleum gas that’s used in vehicles. It costs on average $1 less per gallon than gasoline but is not used widespread in the U.S. According to Limousine Livery, the U.S. is home to only 2% of the world’s 15 million autogas vehicles.
