PHILADELPHIA — Despite the state of the economy, the spirit of giving thrives in the limousine industry. The Philadelphia Regional Limousine Association’s (PRLA) 2011 Limos for Santa Campaign has successfully kicked off Monday with Santa (aka PRLA President, Philip Jagiela) forgoing the sleigh for a limousine in the Southampton, Penn., Fourth of July Parade.

Santa sported a red, white and blue cap and sunglasses for the event leaving a few parade watchers to question if he was taking over for Uncle Sam. Others felt that he may have been a morph of Arlo Guthrie, David Crosby and ZZ Top.

Children waved to Santa as he drove down the pike. Some spouted off toy wishes while others asked that he deliver a limousine to them. Santa parked his limousine at the community’s Country Day Fair where residents will be bringing toy donations through the week. Toys collected will be delivered in December to children in residence at St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children.

The PRLA has been sponsoring the Limos for Santa event for the past eight years. Association members collect toys at their locations.  A limousine caravan carrying Santa parades from the Philadelphia Parking Authority lot in South Philadelphia past City Hall to St. Christopher’s in North Philadelphia. The Philadelphia Parking Authority Police provides an escort for the caravan as it parades through the city. Toys will be delivered on Dec. 12.
