Mercedes S550e Plug-In Hybrid Hits US Streets

The Street recently reviewed the new Mercedes Benz S550e plug-in hybrid, which touts a mpg that can compete with even the Toyota Prius. Daimler’s Mercedes S-Class is an iconic large luxury sedan and the pinnacle of rear-seat comfort. This car is expensive, though, and we’re not talking about just the $95,325 starting price for the base version, the S550. It gulps gasoline. The author’s tests of the four-wheel-drive version of the S550 yielded 15 miles per gallon in the city and 25 mpg on the highway -- under ideal conditions.
