I drove a guy to the airport that works for a company that is in the middle of designing driverless cars as of now for a foreign car company in europe. He said he does not believe we will see this in our lifetime but it will come. The big issues they have now are: Animals and if they dart out or if it is a human standing on side of road. Rain and snow blocking up the sensors. If at a stoplight and an emergency vehicle is approaching and to wait for it to go. Funerals and not passing. A traffic light that is out. A stop sign that has been knocked down A person directing traffic. There are a lot of variables that come into play. It will have to be with all cars and streets communicating with each other. It would be very expensive. They are working on semis to tailgate each other because they will be able to communicate with each other and the lead semi will have the coordinates of maybe 5 trucks. That will happen but only for fuel efficiency. There will still be a driver behind the wheel.
