Florida Bill Seeks Strict Regulations On TNCs

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — A bill (HB 17) introduced in the Florida House by Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fort Walton Beach) calls for Transportation Network Companies to abide by stricter insurance regulations and conduct state and national driver background checks.

The main issue is over TNCs carrying the proper insurance that both taxi and limousine companies are subject to under the Florida Financial responsibility law.

Throughout the country, there is strong concern from private transportation companies over the murky issue of TNCs carrying personal liability insurance and also “gap” commercial insurance that kicks in when TNC drivers accept a mobile-app service call. The proposed bill is an attempt to regulate insurance for TNCs that is in line with existing state mandates for limousine and taxi companies. WPTV news article and video here.
