NJ Limo, Taxi Operators Demand TNCs Be Regulated Same Way

Posted on February 9, 2015

TRENTON, N.J. -- Drivers and owners of taxi and limousine companies lobbied the state Senate Transportation Committee Monday to require drivers for Uber and Lyft to meet the same requirements they do -- to carry insurance, get background checks and have their vehicles inspected.

Jeffrey M. Shanker, president of the Limousine Association of New Jersey, said TNCs should be subject to the same regulations as his industry because they offer the same services.

TNCs "think they are something new, and something that should be unregulated," he said. "They are not. They are a taxi or limousine."

As a result, they should be forced to collect sales tax, submit to background checks, and buy commercial insurance, Shanker said.

When will Uber like companies be regulated. Will it be after all the limo companies are out of business. The competition is not fair between Limo companies and Uber/Uber like companies. What is the Governor of NJ doing?
