NJ Operators Still Struggle In Economy

NEWARK, N.J. — As gray skies promise to give way to the idyllic days that make June synonymous with proms and weddings, limousine companies feel only tepidly optimistic.

Many owners can’t afford to offer discounts that would persuade students to spend months of part-time pay on a luxury ride to their last high school hurrah.

Or win over soon-to-be newlyweds weighing a swanky ride to the chapel against a bigger down payment on a house.

Dealing with unpredictable gas prices is part and parcel of an industry that puts 50,000 to 100,000 miles on each of its vehicles in a year. But the economy is uncertain at best, and gas prices have hovered near $4 a gallon for months.

Karen Gajda, owner of Country Club Transportation in Newark, said business has been rough for a long time.
