FARIBAULT, Minn. — Chicago-based MEGABUS.COM, Coach USA’s hallmark line service carrier, has recently put in service its 100th Van Hool TD925 double-deck luxury coach imported into North America by ABC Companies.
Coach USA is a subsidiary of the Stagecoach Group, one of the world's largest bus, coach and rail groups with operations in the United Kingdom and North America. In addition to MegaBus, the company offers a wide variety of transportation services in North America.
Dale Moser, CEO of the Stagecoach’s North American operations, said in a statement, “We didn’t start out to buy 100 double-deck coaches; we ordered 17. Stagecoach Chairman Brian Souter had developed a concept of quality line service in Europe, and we wanted to try it here. His vision has worked so well over the past three years that we’ve had to add more TD925s to keep up with demand.”
Megasbus started with three routes connecting six cites, and now serves 40 cities in the U.S. and Canada. The appeal of the double-deck bus has contributed to the success of Megabus. The 81-passenger coaches are efficient, offering a green alternative for travelers without sacrificing comfort. The buses offer free Wi-Fi service, 110-volt outlets and a luxury entertainment system.
John Oakman, senior vice president of fleet and maintenance, said in a statement, “These coaches have performed very well. They’re similar to other models of Van Hools in our fleet, so we save on training and parts. The TD925 has been tested for stability and safety to European standards that surpass U.S. requirements. They are a unique combination of luxury, reliability and safety.”
ABC COMPANIES, Van Hool’s North American distributor, supports Megabus with technical and parts expertise. “We can’t afford to have these coaches down, and with their help, we’re running the wheels off them,” Oakman said.
MegaBus’ Van Hools feature Cummins ISM engines and ZF 12 speed Astronic transmissions. In addition, safety equipment includes passenger seat belts, SmarTire monitoring, Kidde fire suppression systems, an upper deck monitoring camera, and a Saucon GPS system.
