BLACK & BLACK: Operator Makes Most Of Turkey Time

RICHMOND, VA — Operator Randy Allen of James Limousine plans to make the most of a slow day this year for chauffeured transportation companies.

The Friday after Thanksgiving typically is not a big day for work, business travel, or even nights out, as families gather for Thanksgiving on Thursday and head out to malls, restaurants, and movie theaters on Friday.

For the first time, James Limousine is promoting a “Black Friday Shopping Help” chauffeured service for clients who want to take the traffic and parking hassles out of early morning or all-day discounted Christmas shopping sprees.

James Limousine, which owns and operates 20 chauffeured vehicles in Virginia’s capital city metro region, is offering a 10% discounted coupon on its standard livery rates. A group of three shoppers can reserve a Town Car sedan for as little as $17 per person per hour, not including gratuity.

Allen said he got the idea for the offer from one of his chauffeurs, who thought it would be an effective way to make the most of a typically slow day for the limousine industry.

“We encourage the shopper to put together a group of friends and share the vehicle and make it economical,” Allen said. “Our chauffeurs can take shoppers door-to-door and they’ll have someone to carry the packages out to the car for them.”

As of Tuesday, there were no takers yet for the shopping deal, Allen said, but his advertising prompted clients to call for other services, such as limousine runs and tacky holiday light tours. “A number of people called us who had in mind to book something,” he said.

Like many operators, Allen has noticed a sustained turnaround in business in September. “October was one of best months in the three years we’ve been in the business. We’re on track to end the year within 10% of last year’s revenues.”
