WAGES & CONTRACTORS: NLA Updates Difficult Issue Facing Operators

MARLTON, N.J. — The National Limousine Association (NLA) has posted on its WEBSITE www.limo.org, a Wage and Hour Law Primer for the Chauffeured Transportation Industry prepared by NLA general counsel, Keller and Heckman LLP in Washington, D.C. The report contains the attorneys’ explanation of various operating models for chauffeured vehicle companies in the U.S.

NLA President Ron Sorci said the report is being posted for the industry as a way to continue educating and informing members. “This piece is meant solely as an educational tool,” Sorci said. “We feel that when information becomes available to us, that we should share it with the industry.”

The report provides basic information about the general requirements of federal wage and hour laws and the responsibility of employers to properly classify workers. However, the NLA cautions that each state has its own requirements and advises operators to seek their own counsel.

The primer will go a long way toward helping operators know the law, comply with rules, and take measures to avoid any potential conflicts.

“Labor and business models have always been major issues in our industry and by having a document available from the NLA's outside law firm, we felt it would be appropriate and helpful to get this information out to our members,” Sorci said. “There are many labor-related lawsuits throughout the country and we wanted to be as proactive as possible to at least supply some important educational tools to address such issues.”
