TORONTO – Ontario Northland is expected to introduce new security measures for its bus services in the coming months following an industry-wide review.

Company spokeswoman Trisha Marshall said a review of security and safety measures for drivers and passengers was underway before a grisly murder in July on board a Greyhound bus near Portage la Prairie, Man.

Marshall said the review, involving the entire industry, is being led by Motor Coach Canada and the Ontario Motor Coach Association. As a result, she said security enhancements are expected to be rolled out over the next few months.

Edmonton, Winnipeg and Calgary are being swept by hand-held metal detectors. Passengers are now required to store their luggage in cargo compartments instead of bringing it on board. The only exceptions are for small personal items, such as purses and wallets. Greyhound said the measures do not stem directly from what happened in Manitoba, but are a result of a two-year study at improving safety.
