Child Missing from Collision with Limousine

OAKLAND, Calif. — Divers suspended their search on Sunday for a 10-month old baby missing after a pickup truck plunged into a roadside canal flooded with rainwater.

Six people were in the truck when it crashed Saturday night, killing the driver, a 19-year-old Oakland man, police said. Two other adults and two children were injured.

The baby was not restrained in the truck when it landed upside down about 25 feet below the road, Oakland police spokesman Jeff Thomason said.

Searchers, including a dive team, began canvassing a 2-mile area Sunday morning after failing to find the baby the night before, said Oakland Fire Department Lt. David Brue.

The search was called off Sunday when it became too dark, and was scheduled to restart Monday.

The divers submerged in the polluted, murky water had almost no visibility, making search efforts difficult, said Alameda County sheriff's spokesman J.D. Nelson.

"The task is as unpleasant as you can get," Nelson said.

Fire officials described the search as a recovery, rather than a rescue, operation.

Police say the truck collided with a limousine and flipped off the rain-soaked road into 3 feet of running water in a flood-control canal.

Authorities have ruled out drugs, alcohol and speeding as factors in the accident but were still investigating to determine whether any crime had been committed, Thomason said.
