ATLANTA — Investigators are still looking into the cause of Saturday’s accident on Highway I-85 near downtown Atlanta, which left two dead and one seriously injured passenger. According to Officer Eric Schwartz, the Atlanta Police Dept. is conducting the investigation without assistance from state or federal agencies.
The accident occurred on Saturday at 6:38 p.m. in a 2007 Krystal Bus K-33 (a van cutaway style shuttle bus), which has a maximum seating capacity of 32 passengers. There were 20 people onboard during the crash, including the driver. The bus was operated by Greene Classic Limousines of Atlanta.
Jeff Greene, president of the company (and also the current president of the NLA), issued the following statement following the accident:
“On behalf of everyone at Greene Classic Limousine, I want to extend my heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims in yesterday’s tragedy. We’re doing everything we can to help the families get the answers they need.
We’re cooperating with the authorities to determine the details of what happened Saturday night. But for the time being, we don’t have any more information. We’re truly stunned and heartbroken about this tragedy, and will release pertinent information as we receive it.”
The deceased include Gary Pleasant, 64, a sales executive at Simmons Co., and Sharon Murray, 34, a mother of two children. There are no details available on the other injured party.
The details on the vehicle crash are not year clear. According to Officer Schwartz, the bus hit the freeway’s median wall and then hit utility poles. The bus’ steering mechanism was damaged during the crash, and a tire blew out, however the sequence of events still has to be determined. News reports have presented varying descriptions and details, which will have to be sorted out by investigators.
Seat belts are not required on buses of this type. The U.S. Congress is considering making seat belts mandatory on motor coaches, but that bill is still working its way through the legislative process.
