WASHINGTON, D.C. — BMW will start the first mass-production of hydrogen-burning cars early next year, says the company. The 7-Series executive cars emit only water vapor while running on hydrogen and are expected to hit the market in April 2007.

The company plans to lease the initial few hundred cars to selected customers because of their high price. According to the automaker the cars will be capable of switching between burning standard gasoline and hydrogen because the alternative fuel supply is not ready to completely support the new market. The company says its long-term goal is to offer hydrogen motors in all of its cars.
