WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. - Prom season has just ended, and so has Westchester's prom safety patrol, which sent police officers to the roads outside 65 proms in the county, checking for underage drinking and unlicensed limousine drivers and operators in an attempt to keep high school students safe.
One out of every four limousines stopped by county police en route to proms in May and June had safety or licensing problems. The county, with help from local police, checked 440 prom-bound limos and 56 buses. The results:
• 46 bottles of alcohol were confiscated, including 31 liquor-filled water bottles
• 330 limousines complied with all relevant laws; 110 did not
• Six limousines were impounded after safety violations were found
• One driver was arrested, accused of driving with a suspended license and registration
• 447 summonses were issued to companies, limousines, and drivers after safety and licensing violations were found
Summonses included operating without required permits from the county or New York City; operating a vehicle with more seats than allowed; and operating without the proper licensing. Fines ranged from $125 to $3,000.
The most serious incident occurred May 26, when county and New Rochelle police stopped a limousine bound for Bedford's Fox Lane High School prom and found a 16-year-old girl passed out and unresponsive. Police got the girl and several classmates to a hospital, where she was treated for alcohol poisoning.
