CHICAGO — Fans of MTV’s popular series “My Super Sweet 16” will get a chance to see event planner Sondra Morgan in action in about a month when an episode is aired about Bobby Strauser, son of Chicago limousine tycoon, Limo Bob. Morgan landed the coordinating job for the event after she had a chance meeting with the senior Bob Strauser and mentioned her event background.
Strauser, it turned out, had an MTV crew heading to his Chicago neighborhood to film Bobby’s birthday party, and neck-deep in hundreds of details, a planner was exactly what he needed.
Strauser is a flamboyant limousine builder, broker, and retailer known for his 100-foot-long limos, extravagant gold jewelry, and bigger-than-life personality. And the party he was planning for his son, Morgan said, was just as big.
Centering on a Hollywood theme, Morgan had 12 days to put together a party for 300 people, and with MTV crews on hand for the event, it had to be spectacular.
Dancers, a band from Los Angeles, DJs, Hollywood star impersonators, and themed decorations were just the top of the to-do list Morgan inherited with the event. Add to that a life-sized ice sculpture of Bobby, a 12-foot-long birthday cake, and a grand entrance that included fog, glitter, and bombshells, and you have just a tiny glimpse of the scope of the bash.
At the party, no fewer than eight MTV cameras swarmed guests and the Strausers, recording every move as they angled their way around a phalanx of stoic bodyguards that accompany the family. For a surreal 10 days before the event, Morgan rode around in a convoy of stretch limousines with the family and a bodyguard, an MTV camera in her face, and a constantly growing list of things to accomplish on her lap.
After a while, Morgan said, the cameras became just part of the scenery as she maneuvered the serious business of getting the party put together. “Probably the hardest part of doing the event was that MTV wanted me to be with the family so they could film every day, but I had a lot of work I needed to get done.”
The end result, Morgan said, was a lot of days without make-up or much sleep, but the party went off without a hitch and the family was very happy. Morgan was happy too, she said — happy to get some sleep and go back home to her family in Winona after a wild adventure with Chicago’s rich and famous.
