JFK Airport Opens Cell Phone Lot

NEW YORK — Kennedy International Airport opened a new short-term parking lot for those using cell phones to communicate with arriving passengers they intend quickly to pick up. According to Pasquale DiFulco, a spokesman for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, the 250-car lot was opened as part of Kennedy Airport’s program to enhance customer service and to reduce safety hazards.

For limousine companies like Boston Coach, whose business is about 65% airport related, the cell phone lot can save a significant amount of money. A single three-hour visit at the airport can cost drivers up to $12 if they park in the airport’s short-term parking garages. That adds up for those who make five or more trips to the airport each week. And parking in a free lot certainly beats circling around and wasting gas, or being repeatedly chased away by police, limousine driver Mike Streeter said. “They just don’t let you stand,” Boston Coach driver Gabriel Pareves said. “Definitely, this is better.”

On a recent visit, between 15 and 20 cars were parked in the lot at any given time. Some limousine drivers and those waiting to pick up friends and relatives sat in their cars reading or sleeping, while others washed their windows or emptied out trash. Currently there are no plans for the implementation of cell phone lots at La Guardia or Newark Liberty airports because of lack of space, DiFulco said.

Kennedy Airport’s cell phone lot is located right off Federal Circle on the Van Wyck Expressway.
