The New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission has purchased new fingerprint scanners for speedier background checks of operators applying for licenses.

The TLC, and the Waterfront Commission, purchased the Identix scanner system, which has direct dial-up links to the FBI?s fingerprint database. Similar systems are used in all of the city?s police precincts.

The TLC?s previous process of checking fingerprints consisted of manually taking the person?s prints and mailing them off to the FBI. This resulted in approximately five weeks waiting period. The new system will scan the applicant?s prints and send them digitally to the FBI, with results returning in a matter of days.
