OCT. LCT: Financial success in this industry depends on how much information you gather and what you do with it.
CALGARY, Canada — Ald. Diane Colley-Urquhart is fighting a new change to local bylaws that prohibits alcohol in city limos and taxis over fears it will hurt business and increase drinking and driving in the area.
"I don't recall any discussion as to why we took this out of the bylaw because we always used to allow drinking in limos," she said.
"I think it's just fine when you get a whole group together that they can enjoy a bottle of champagne — these cars are fully equipped."
Colley-Urquhart will be calling on the council next week to direct the Taxi and Limousine Advisory Committee to survey the limousine and private bus industry, other stakeholders, and city administration to determine if there's any reason to prohibit drinking.
Any recommendations should be left in the hands of the committee charged with regulating the industry instead of council "micromanaging" private business, she said. But Colley-Urquhart added she's worried the rules will not only be tough on business, but could be a safety concern if people heading home from a night on the town want to keep the party going and opt to drive home instead.
"I just think we should go back to the way it was — just leave it alone," she said.
"I've talked to the limo guys and they just haven't had the same business." Under the wider provincial law, alcohol is legal in limos and buses.
