Stardust Cruises Implements Program to Protect Employees from Violence

SANTA MARIA, Calif. — Concerned for the safety of its employees, Stardust Cruises Limousine Service has initiated a Workplace Violence Prevention Program. According to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), taxi and livery drivers (chauffeurs) are 60 times more likely than other workers to be murdered while on the job.

“We have decided to implement this program now because of the recent shootings in the news, as well as an incident in which one of our chauffeurs was assaulted and threatened,” said Susie Martin, owner of Stardust Cruises Limousines.

Martin introduced the program at the company’s last safety meeting. “It was well received,” states Martin. “I think most of our employees were shocked to learn they were at such a high risk. Everyone thinks employees working in fast food markets or gas stations as being at risk. But we often work alone, handle money, work with the public, work at night, and deal with people who have been drinking, all risk factors for being a victim of workplace violence.” The program, adapted from OSHA and the Centers for Disease Control, was customized for the livery industry. “There are a lot of resources out there for training employees,” informs Martin. The CDC/NIOSH has a free booklet and DVD that Stardust Cruises is implementing into its program.

Martin is grateful her chauffeur was not injured when a customer pushed the chauffeur up against the limousine and threatened to kill her. “It was very traumatic for her. It took a lot of courage for her to get behind the wheel again. We must take action to prevent this from happening again.” To learn more about Workplace Violence visit the NIOSH Web site at www.cdc.gov/niosh and the OSHA Web site www.osha.gov.
