LAWRENCE, Kan. – Police are looking for leads in the case of an 18-year-old woman who said she was raped early on Sept. 5 after accepting a ride in a stretch limousine outside a bar near the Kansas University campus.

The woman, a high-school student from Georgia who was visiting friends at KU, told police she left The Hawk, at 1340 Ohio, about 1:30 a.m. and needed a ride home when a black limousine pulled up and a group of people got out, said Sgt. Dan Ward, a Lawrence Police spokesman.

Two men who remained in the limo offered her a ride, and as soon as the vehicle began moving, one man inside held her while the other raped her, she told police.

The men, described as college-aged white males wearing nice shirts and jeans, were the only other people in the limousine besides the driver, according to the report.

They drove a short distance and kicked the woman out of the limo at the top of the hill on 14th Street. She went back to The Hawk, used someone's phone to call an acquaintance, and made arrangements to go back to Georgia, Ward said.

A Georgia hospital notified Lawrence Police the next day, after the woman went in for a sexual assault exam. Ward said he didn't know why the woman didn't report the incident in Lawrence.

Police had no suspects but were calling local limousine companies trying to identify the driver.

One limousine-company owner said he was surprised the driver either didn't know something was wrong or didn't do anything about it.

Larry Ojeleye, owner of Affordable Limousine Service said that, by coincidence, his company had a limousine bus at The Hawk earlier in the night that was rented by a wealthy KU fan in town for the season's first football game.

But he said the limousine involved in the alleged rape wasn't his. His company doesn’t provide service to students because they tend to mess up your limo, Ojeleye said.

Dave Old, manager of Midwest Transportation, said his company also had a limousine in Lawrence Saturday night for a party – but not at The Hawk. Ward asked anyone with information about the incident to call the Crime Stoppers hot line at 785-843-TIPS.
