Connecticut Limo Drivers Help With Hurricane Relief

GULFPORT, MISS. – Waters are receding in New Orleans, but slowly. Survivors who said they would stick it out and never leave their beloved city were forced to evacuate, partly because the stagnant water in New Orleans is a toxic brew of filth, death and disease.

But New Orleans is just one of so many communities suffering. Supplies and relief are now pouring into the Gulf Coast including aid from a handful of Connecticut limousine drivers. A few days ago they were regular folks watching hurricane relief efforts, and not knowing quite how to help.

Anthony Dawkins of Connecticut Limo said, "I saw on the news everything that was going on in New Orleans and Mississippi, and you feel compelled, that you want to do those things."

Oliver Thomas of Connecticut Limo said, "At one point I even prayed. I said, if it is possible Lord, help me so I can do something to help the people down here."

For more than a week, prayers and donations have poured into the Gulf Coast region, but what some people in this devastated area need more than anything is medical attention and that's where the limousine drivers fit in.

Chaudhury Haidar of Connecticut Limo said, "Our company president told me to get those ambulances from New York down there to help the disaster center."

Nine Connecticut Limo chauffeurs drove eight AMR ambulances and their van from New York City to AMR's "Kamp Katrina" in Gulfport, Miss. They drove more than 1,300 miles, almost straight through with just one stop. They arrived in Gulfport at about 3 a.m., and nobody regrets the trip.

Beatrice Rivera of Connecticut Limo said, "It was a lifetime experience. It was something we're going to keep in our hearts forever."

AMR's regular ambulance drivers have now taken over and keep saving lives on Mississippi's coast, and the limousine drivers turned right around and drove back to Connecticut.
