Florida Limo Groups Unite In Fight Against TNCs

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. — The continuing fight against TNCs throughout the Sunshine State was the main focus of discussion at the Florida Limousine Association (FLA) meeting held Monday night during the Chauffeur Driven Show at the Taj Mahal.

FLA President Rick Versace (A1A Airport and Limousine Service) told members that the association is stepping up its efforts to educate the public about the significant safety issues posed by TNC drivers. Versace unveiled a new Public Service Advisory (PSA) warning that will be distributed to the media, and a soon-to-be-launched PSA video that he hopes will run on cable and TV statewide.

In addition, Versace noted that the FLA plans to retain a public relations firm, rehire its lobbying team, create a Political Action Committee (PAC), and possibly file a class-action lawsuit against Uber and Lyft. “Now is the time for all of us to come together and pursue every avenue to slow them (TNCs) down,” said Versace.

Attending the meeting and showing support for the FLA were presidents and members of regional Florida associations, including the West Florida Livery Association (WFLA), Greater Orlando Limousine Association (GOLA), and South Florida Limousine Association (SFLA).  In fact, GOLA President Cliff Wright (Royal Transportation Group) said his membership recently voted unanimously to join the FLA. “Now when you join GOLA, you automatically join the FLA,” Wright said, adding his personal support for “the great job Rick is doing representing the industry.”

SFLA President Neil Goodman (Aventura Worldwide Transportation Services) told the audience that his association in still fighting the TNCs in the Miami region and also working together with the FLA to lobby against TNCs and craft legislation in Tallahassee, the state capital. “As of now, it looks like the state will regulate TNCs regarding insurance and background checks, but anything beyond that will be up to local authorities,” he said. Then it will be up to local authorities.”

WFLA President and NLA Board of Director Dave Shaw (Olympus Limousine) said that Hillsborough County is ground zero in the fight against TNCs due to a Special Act where the state is involved in the County Public Transportation Commission. “We’re the only municipality in the state that has this Special Act, so any changes must go through Tallahassee and Hillsborough County, noting this is why TNCs established a foothold in the county is important to the TNCs in their state lobbying effort,“ said Shaw.

    t is imperative that the TNC's be shut down entirely. The people, the consumers need to be educated that their safety while riding in a TNC vehicle cannot and does not provide them any protections in the event of an accident. We all know that just because they offer a click of the button for immediate transportation, the customer is riding at their own risk. The TNC's are misleading the public and need to be exposed.I would like to join the fight to help educate the public and rid the streets of these corrupted misleading organization(s).
