LONG ISLAND, N.Y. — Suffolk County legislators Tuesday approved a bill to create a new Taxi and Limousine Commission that will have the authority to license companies operating in the county. Because of regional reciprocity agreements, operators will be allowed to do business legally throughout the tri-state region.

The TLC will operate under the state’s “Code 498” that regulates interjurisdictional pre-arranged for-hire vehicles, giving Suffolk County operators the ability to do business by having just one license instead of the current policy where operators need multiple municipal licenses to conduct business throughout the state.

The TLC also will ensure that all operators working in the county have proper licenses and insurance, and adhere to safety requirements. LILA President Robert Cunningham supported the legislation because there were issues with uninsured operators in the county, as well as the county not having reciprocity agreements with New York City and other Long Island cities and towns.
