RICHMOND, Va. — The Virginia Limousine Association (VLA) is asking limo operators statewide to contact their legislators to protest Uber and Lyft continuing to operate in the state despite a cease-and-desist order from the Department of Motor Vehicles.

The DMV has been wrestling with how to regulate the new TNCs, gathering input from all private transportation stakeholders, include the VLA, before it proposes new rules that deal with all private transportation companies. However, even in the wake of the DMV issuing fines against the TNCs and threats of civil penalties up to $1,000 per violation against the drivers, the TNCs keep operating in the state.

“As a licensed motor carrier for passengers in Virginia, I support the cease-and-desist order issued Thursday against Uber and Lyft regarding operating in Virginia illegally,” said VLA President Glenn Stafford (Love Limousine). “It is unacceptable for them to thumb their noses at Virginia law as indicated by the Uber/Lyft response immediately following (read story). There can be no back-tracking from this stance and the laws should be enforced to support the Virginia business that play by those rules.”
When contacted for a response, a Uber spokesman directed LCT to a recent blog post.

The Virginian Pilot newspaper also is running a poll asking the question: Was DMV correct in issuing Cease and Desist orders to Uber and Lyft? Stafford is urging operators to respond.
