You may have noticed I took a few months off from LCT Blog. It was a time to recharge, organize, and relax. It wasn’t meant to imply I was any less invested in the limo business. In fact, I am amused that at least once a week someone will ask me if I miss “being in the limo business.” The answer is always a firm, absolute — NO!

The answer has multiple meanings. I understand the question to reference the daily operations of running a transportation business. To that particular question, the answer is NO! I don’t miss the stress of vehicles overheating while idling in 113 degree heat. I don’t miss the early morning calls to tell me a chauffeur didn’t show up for work. I don’t miss the enforcement inspections from state and federal officials. I don’t miss crying, whining, sniveling chauffeurs asking why they don’t get more hours or why they were assigned a 1 a.m. airport pick-up. No, I don’t miss those drawbacks at all.

The other reason for saying “no” is because I never left the business. I continue to work as a feature writer and consultant for the largest, most popular magazine in the limo industry. I am a meeting facilitator for Driving Results, a company with the sole purpose of educating limo operators, sharing information, and helping grow the businesses of our various Focus 20 Groups. That’s 20 operators who I interact with year-round.

As the marketing manager for Chosen Payments, I travel the country attending industry meetings, events, and shows. I am planning and managing a Casino Night on July 29 for the Arizona Limousine Association in Phoenix. I sure hope it’s not too hot. I made a PowerPoint presentation last week for the Colorado Limousine Association, and I chat with limo operators nearly every day about their credit card processing concerns.

While I no longer manage a transportation company daily, I am still financially invested in the company. Just today I received a call from the office to ask which employees are to be paid for the 4th of July even though they didn’t work, and how to handle the discipline of a chauffeur who did something questionable. I still occasionally go to the office to sign legal documents or fight with officials at LAX over nonsense.  

So, no, I do not miss the limo industry—because I never left it. I simply realigned how I work within it.  And, yes, for the past year and a half I have truly enjoyed my new life and I look forward to sharing it with you again each month. Next week, I will be in New York City. I will be leading three days of discussion with the Wheels In Motion group, a group of Driving Results.  Whether running a company or not, this industry never gets dull, and I am passionate about it as ever.
