Many activities can divert a driver’s attention away from the road. Every distraction, even for a second, puts the driver, passengers, fellow motorists, and even pedestrians in grave danger. More than 1,200 people are killed each year by distracted drivers.

Here is a list of activities commercial drivers frequently engage in without thinking of the consequences of these momentary distractions:

  • Texting
  • Using a cell phone
  • Eating
  • Talking with passengers
  • Grooming
  • Reading
  • Using a navigation system
  • Adjusting the radio

Bus drivers in particular are forbidden under FMCSA rules from doing five particular things with a cell phone. These include: reaching for it, holding it, dialing, texting, and reading.
