Internet Spurs Miracles In The Making

In 1899, Charles Duell was the Commissioner of the U.S. Patent Office. He was famously quoted as saying, “Everything that can be invented has been invented.”

Well, apparently not. In fact, unbeknownst to Duell, we hadn’t seen anything yet. One little item he failed to envision was the Internet.

And because of the Internet, human beings have been revealed for what we truly are. We are, without any doubt, miracles in the making.

Forever Connected

The Internet has connected people from every corner of the planet. From the slums of Bangladesh to the rocky surface of Mars, we are witnessing human life on a level of detail never seen before. As a result, our understanding of what it means to be human is gaining in clarity. Fear of our racial differences is fading. Universal rejection of all violence is solidifying.

The undeniable truth emerging from this unprecedented panoramic view of humanity is this: Give two people the same challenge under the same circumstances, and one will find a way while the other will find an excuse.

Put two people under a hail of bullets in Las Vegas, and one will run while the other risks her life to save a person she does not know. Put two people into retirement, and one will suffer loss of purpose and identity while the other cruises a moonlit dessert highway on a brand new Harley Davidson with Midnight Rider on 11.

Yes Can Do

In a world where women are drawn into the wretched abyss of drugs and prostitution, a single mom raising a handicapped child fights to complete her college degree. In a world of rampant selfishness and materialism, a young soldier stands guard, thousands of miles away from his home and family, alone but for his dedication to the protection of human life.

A child told she will never walk becomes an Olympic gold medalist.

A tearful mother hears the sound of her child’s heart beating in the chest of an organ recipient.

A deaf man composes some of the world’s greatest symphonies.

A man born with no arms or legs climbs to the summit of Mt. Kilimanjaro.

The examples are countless. The heroics are astonishing. The Internet has revealed us, for in every one of them, lives every one of us. In every one of us lives every one of them. This is who we are. This is what we do. We are all brothers and sisters bound by a legacy of miracles in the making.

So as the Internet piles on the evidence as to the infinite possibilities of our shared humanity, how will we respond?  Well, like we said, give two people the same challenge under the same circumstances, and one will find a way while the other will find an excuse.

One will say it can’t be done. The other will prove him wrong.
