Smile If You’re In the Limousine “Service” Business

Service is the catchword in the limousine business. How many times have you heard that this is a service business? Over the years, our pages have been filled with service-oriented articles and suggestions.

We are not the only magazine extolling the virtues of a service orientation Pick up Time, Business Week or The Wall Street Journal, or a number of other business journals, and you’ll find them explaining that service businesses are growing tremendously. According to these business and consumer journals, certain segments of our population are demanding service...and are willing to pay for it.

According to recent research, consumers are willing to pay as much as $100 an hour for some of the following services:

  • Picking up restaurant meals.
  • Wrapping and mailing items.
  • Finding or doing various things.
  • Picking up dry cleaning.
  • Plant care.

On a creative note, it might be worthwhile to incorporate some of these services into a livery operation. This could be marketed as a “Super Service.” The consumer marketplace certainly seems to be interested in services that make everyday chores more convenient.

I suppose that any business providing top-level service would be complying with government regulations concerning licensing and insurance. Some operators, however, may not know about some aspect of a regulation that could cause trouble. Recently, for example, the U.S. Department of Transportation paid a surprise visit to a New Jersey operator and pointed out a number of operating and recordkeeping requirements that must be brought into immediate compliance. In California, the Public Utilities Commission has closed down fifty-two services this year for operating without proper licensing and insurance. It would be well worth checking into regulations in your area to make sure that your operation meets current requirements.

Finally,the ’87 Limousine & Chauffeur Show in Las Vegas will be held on November 21-23 at the Las Vegas Hilton. That’s the weekend before Thanksgiving.
