The Era of the Limousine

In 1902, Oldsmobile used a headline in one of their ads which stated. "THE PASSING OF THE HORSE." In those days, the automobile industry had to convince the public that automobiles worked...and were not just a fad. The automobile industry had not yet reached the level of selling dreams and, to be sure, you could always depend on a horse.

The limousine industry has reached the same plateau with regard to its image. Acceptance, demand, and informed operators have created a national transportation industry that did not exist a decade ago. Limousines do work well for business, pleasure, or pure luxury Limousines are not a fad as had been proclaimed a few years ago.

Attendance at the Las Vegas Limousine & Chauffeur Show set another record with approximately 1850 registrants in addition to the exhibitors. During one of the conference sessions, an impromptu show of hands indicated that about half of these participants were attending the show for the first time.

However, what was most encouraging was the quality of our show attendees. In reviewing the show evaluations, talking with exhibitors, and in other conversation, show attendees were described as inquisitive, interested in success, responsive, and of high-caliber. That is impressive and that is why I say that his is no fad industry.

1988 should be an outstanding year for livery operators who operate profes­sionally and keep a close eye on ever-escalating expenses. It may even be eventful enough to proclaim, "THE PASSING OF THE TAXI!"
