A new name has emerged in the limousine manufacturing arena but it comes with a familiar face — Jack Chalmers.   Chalmers has been converting vehicles since 1992 and has embarked this year on a new venture: Chalmers Automotive, LLC. Housed in a 9,000-square-foot showroom in a new building in Liberty, MO, Chalmers Automotives, LLC, provides a wide variety of custom products built on the Mercedes-Benz turbo diesel Sprinter Van. All vehicles are custom manufactured to the particular client’s needs.   “We build mobile offices, night club limousines, family and personal use conversion as well as mobility vehicles and RV packages,” Chalmers says. “Make no mistake, we are a custom design and production shop.”

Chalmers Automotive is a family business. Jack’s two sons and daughter in-law and his wife, Vernice, all work in the business. “We have assembled a team that has over 50 years of experience in design, engineering, manufacturing, electronics and cabinetry,” Chalmers says.

“It is so exciting to work with such a dependable group and it has enabled me to surround myself with my family and friends.”  Chalmers started the new business because he felt he needed to control the manufacturing process and he wanted his clients to know that he stands behind his products. “I am always amazed at how many people out there who have bought from a manufacturer and then can’t get a hold of them when there is a problem,” Chalmers says. “We want clients for life.”

Creating a new business in a recession is risky, but Chalmers remains optimistic since he believes he is prepared for the recovery with his ability to customize a popular vehicle.

“Our industry is very resilient. The demand for Sprinters has increased substantially,” Chalmers says. “Many operators are retrofitting their fleets with them. The Sprinter platform is popular because of the fuel economy. With the turbo diesel engine, operators can green their fleet due to the savings in fuel.”

Chalmers says his company uses the Sprinter platform because it is versatile and agile. Its efficiency makes it easy to drive with plenty of power from the Mercedes-Benz turbo diesel engine. “You can get between 22 and 28 miles to the gallon with these vehicles which makes them very cost effective, especially in the for hire vehicle industry.”

“We intend to build each individual vehicle as if we were building it for ourselves — no compromise on quality regardless of the price,” Chalmers says.

Chalmers has big plans for the company with a separate build site in the near future. He plans to use his current building as corporate offices and showroom.

“We are planning to introduce a new product this fall that is both efficient and clean with numerous transportation applications,” Chalmers says. “I see us manufacturing alternate fuel vehicles within the next five years... and maintaining continued growth by offering a wide variety of custom manufactured products.”
