Gung Ho!

Gung Ho is an unusual approach to business strategy books. The book follows the true story of Peggy Sinclair, a newly-hired general manager of a manufacturing facility. This particular plant was considered to be a lost cause and expected to close within six months to a year. However, the plant made such an amazing rebound, that it is considered to be one of the most famous business turnarounds in American history.

Sinclair noticed that although most of the plant was unmotivated and in disarray, one department stood out as an example of motivation and efficiency. Through her investigations, she found out that the reason for this department’s sharp contrast to the others was due to “Gung Ho”, a philosophy taught to the employees by the Native American supervisor.

Gung Ho is a simple concept: ·The spirit of the Squirrel ·The Way of the Beaver ·The Gift of the Goose

These lessons of nature are thoroughly explained and referenced. The philosophy, which was passed down by the family of Andy Longclaw, the operations manager of the company’s finishing department, inspired motivation, pride, and dedication among the employees. As Sinclair learned and instituted this unique philosophy, the facility slowly became the most productive and efficient plant in the company.

This book is a must read for business owners, supervisors, and managers alike. The lessons highlighted in Gung Ho are typical in nature and are obvious only when pointed out. Gung Ho is another book to make it to my list highly recommended business tools.
