Operations

A Much Needed Morale Boost

I can?t count how many times operators either came up to me or at some point in a conversation at the LCT Show said that being at the show really made them feel good about the state of the industry. Many operators told me that before actually deciding to come to the show, they weren?t sure if they were going to make it this year.

?Business has been really slow and I am needed there. I wasn?t sure if I could justify leaving my operation to go to Vegas right now,? they told me. That?s an understandable statement. However, they continued to say, in some form or another, that they were happy to see the amount of people that showed up, and the information that was made available to them was definitely worth it. They said that they came away feeling more positive about the state of this industry.

Let?s face it, when times first got rough our first action was to focus on our own businesses. We, in a sense, hyper-focused on our businesses so much that anything that could be considered a distraction to us we just didn?t bother with.

That type of hyper-focusing can cause a kind of isolationism of both you and your company within the industry. It?s where you can lose sight of what?s happening in the industry around you because you?re too focused on your own business. There?s nothing wrong with concentrating on your business, but you don?t realize that others are in the same situation or have already made it through it. You just know what you?re experiencing and assume that?s the way it is industry wide.

However, those that attended the show this year saw that many operators were doing and experiencing the same things that they were doing and were confronted with the same problems. They also saw that things weren?t as bleak as they originally thought. The operators I spoke with seemed to become more motivated and more optimistic over the course of the show. Now, it may not have been the show itself that caused this boost in morale, although it didn?t hurt, but maybe it was the fact that operators came together in one place with a better perspective and similar priorities. Operators were able to share experiences and learn some tips to better weather the current economic storm. In the end, many operators returned to their businesses motivated and inspired. So, I ask, who could ask for more?
