Recruiting Methods for Finding the Right Chauffeur

Are operators having trouble finding quality chauffeurs? And what methods do they use to recruit and retain top-flight chauffeurs? We polled a diverse cross section of limousine operators from across North America with various fleet sizes. Some companies we spoke with are happy with their supply of chauffeurs, but many other companies, particularly those with a high growth rate, are having difficulty finding good candidates. In some cases, these shortages seemed to be area specific. In other cases, responses from operators in the same city differed drastically. Is the tight labor market to blame for chauffeur shortages, or does it depend on how the company recruits and treats chauffeurs?

Actually, both statements are true. According to Bureau of Labor statistics released January 7, unemployment figures for December 1999 continued to hover near an astonishingly low four percent, while employment in both the service industries and transportation sectors continued to grow at high rates. A PricewaterhouseCoopers study reports that 70 percent of America?s fastest-growing companies are scaling back growth estimates because they are having trouble finding qualified employees, and 38 percent of CEOs of these firms are attacking the problem by upgrading employee benefit programs. Labor experts agree that today?s situation is different from previous shortages because there are no new waves of younger people coming along. They warn that we can?t rely on demographics to provide short-term answers.
