2014 Bentley Flying Spur Resembles A Ritz-Carlton On Wheels

Posted on October 22, 2013

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. — From the San Francisco Gate’s Top Down Car Blog: “I took a friend who’s an upholsterer for a ride in the 2014 Imperial Blue Bentley Flying Spur. He makes very fine (and very expensive) pieces. In the Bentley, he cast a professional’s eye on the careful stitching of the ivory leather upholstery (Bentley’s calls the color “linen”) and pronounced it flawlessly done. He looked around the rest of the interior, fiddled with the old-fashioned blower vents.

“You know,” he said, “this is a car for a special class of people. It is not for you and me, but is really in a class by itself.”

Actually, I had been thinking in a more humdrum methodology – like the old saw of saying a wealthy CEO puts on his pants just like the rest of us, one leg at a time, my feeling was that this was just another car, albeit it more pricey than most (at $214,000 a pop) and therefore it was, well, nothing special. My friend modified my thinking.

The Flying Spur, in its essence, is big (5,451 pounds, 208 inches long), powerful (6-liter W12 engine pumping out 616 horsepower), fast (zero to 60 in under five seconds; top speed around 200 mph) and extremely comfortable. Only a handful of cars will let you do a 1,000-mile trip in one crack and still feel like a human being at the end of the day. This Bentley is probably at the top of the heap.”
