STUTTGART, Germany — The 2014 Mercedes-Benz E-Class sedan features redesigned, enhanced elements from the outside in. This revision of the E-Class is the most comprehensive than ever before, and makes advance use of developments from the future S-Class, according to the company’s press release.
More efficient powertrains
The engine and drive system of the 2014 E-Class will offer better performance and economical consumption than previous models. The sedan comes in a broad range of gasoline and diesel engines, all of which are fitted with ECO start/stop systems to increase efficiency.
Two different transmissions also are available for the E-Class: a 6-speed manual with high ease of shifting and short shift travel, and a 7G-TRONIC PLUS automatic transmission with DIRECT SELECT lever and DIRECT SELECT shift paddles.
The remodeled 2014 E-Class sedan features an array of intelligent driver assistance systems and a luxurious, modernized dashboard and controls.
Newly introduced is the “short-term” M mode. If the driver has shifted up or down manually, the transmission independently switches back to automatic, fuel-efficient shift mode after a set period of time.
Intelligent drive with new assistance systems
A new “Stereo Multi-Purpose Camera” sits behind the windscreen near the rear-view mirror and features two eyes set at 45-degree angles with an overall range of 500 meters that produce a 3-D view of the area up to 50 meters in front of the vehicle.
Algorithms based on this 3-D visual information detect vehicles driving ahead, oncoming or crossing, pedestrians crossing, and a variety of traffic signs within a large field of vision.
Also standard on the new E-Class are Collision Prevention Assist, a radar-based collision warning system with adaptive brake assist systems that reduce the risk of a rear-end collision, and Attention Assist, which warns drivers of inattentiveness and drowsiness across a wider speed range.
Optional systems on the E-Class are:
- DISTRONIC PLUS with steering assist: Keeps vehicle in its lane and tracks traffic in traffic jams semi-automatically.
- Brake Assist System PLUS with junction assist: Detects crossing traffic and pedestrians, boosting the braking power applied by the driver accordingly.
- PRE-SAFE Brake: Detects pedestrians and initiates autonomous braking to avoid collision at speeds up to 50 mk/h.
- Active Lane Keeping Assist: Detects when the adjacent lane is occupied, including oncoming traffic. When there is risk of a collision, the system can prevent the vehicle from leaving its lane unintentionally, when continuous lines are present, by applying the brakes on one side.
The 2014 E-Class features a new front-end design and new proportions throughout. New headlamps comprised of all functional elements with a single headlamp lens allow the headlamps to retain the “four-eyed” look typical of the E-Class. The dipped beam and daytime headlamps are fitted with partial LED lights as standard. Full LED headlamps are available as an option.
The 2014 E-Class sedan comes in two front-end designs for those who prefer either a luxury look or sporty look.
The new E-Class also is available with two different front-end designs. One offers a classic saloon grille with 3-louvre look and star on the bonnet. The other incorporates a sports car radiator with central star.
The E-Class interior features two-part trim stretching across the entire dashboard. It can be in a wood or aluminum look. Also new are the three-tube instrument cluster, trapezoid-shaped, high-gloss framed display in the head unit, design of the air vents and an analogue clock between the two central vents.
The new E-Class will go on sale in early 2013. Pricing will be announced at Detroit Auto Show in January.
