Operator Buys Rare Packard Limousine

Posted on July 25, 2012

CLEARWATER, FL — Ambassador Limousine & Sedan, Inc. (ALS), the largest and most esteemed ground transportation provider on the West Coast of Florida, has added of one of the most historic cars to its fleet — a dove gray 1934 five-passenger Packard Landaulette limousine.

This iconic luxury vehicle is one of only five in existence in the world as well as the only Packard limousine registered in the state of Florida.

“Many ground transportation providers shy away from purchasing rare, antique cars because of the cost and risk associated with owning and operating these vehicles,” Ambassador Limousine CEO Ken Lucci said in a press release. “But what we’ve learned from our experience working in the wedding industry is that we must have what the bride wants. The bride wants to feel like royalty on her wedding day, which she will when she’s riding in this extremely elegant and rare limousine.”

Ambassador’s collection of luxury vehicles also features a 1965 Rolls Royce Silver Cloud III, designating Ambassador as the only ground transportation provider in West Central Florida with a Rolls Royce fleet. Additionally, Ambassador offers Cadillac luxury sedans, Mercedes Benz limo coaches and various other SUVs, limousines and motorcoaches.

Originally representing the ultimate luxury design for elite drivers during the Great Depression era, the Packard now functions as the most empyreal luxury coach.

Ambassador bought the vehicle from a struggling transportation company in New Jersey through a bankruptcy auction, according to a report in the Gulf Coast Business Review. Lucci chased it through liens and other issues over two years, a process he called a “treasure hunt.” The firm paid a fee in the low six figures for the Packard. The company spent another $50,000 on renovation work that included restoring some of the interior and adding a Cadillac powertrain to make sure it is in mint condition.

The Packard brand fits with the luxury and once-in-a-lifetime philosophy the firm uses with clients, especially for weddings, Lucci said. Detroit-based Packard Motor Car Co. built the vehicles in the early 1900s, which later became a status symbol during the Great Depression.

Renting the Packard from Ambassador costs $200 an hour, for a minimum of five hours. The firm already has had several clients who have requested the vehicle, going as far south as Naples. Lucci said he’s also brought the Packard to charity events, including one recently at the Vinoy Renaissance hotel in downtown St. Petersburg.

Lucci founded Ambassador Limo in 2007. The firm, with $4.5 million in revenues 2011, maintains a fleet of more than 40 vehicles.

“I’ve always been extremely proud of our elite collection of vehicles at Ambassador, as well as our firm commitment to excellence, both in service and in value,” Lucci said. “Yet I’m also constantly seeking ways to enhance our fleet and build on our past success, which I believe our company has truly accomplished in purchasing the unique Packard,” he added.
