[UPDATED, 3/19/12, 5 p.m. EDT: See below]

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. — A moment five years in the making occurred when four 2013 Lincoln MKT Town Cars were delivered to Towne Livery near Buffalo, N.Y. on Saturday, March 17, exactly 66 miles from where they were made across the border in Oakville, Ontario.

The new MKTs are among the first from the first-ever production batch, known as “Job 1,” of the luxury limousine vehicle that replaces the retired Lincoln Town Car Executive L and serves as the official base model for the next generation stretched Lincoln limousines.

[UPDATE: Complete Fleet/Maplecrest Ford Lincoln in Vauxhall, N.J. also received its first truckload of the MKT the same weekend, and all five have been sold and delivered as of Monday, March 19, vice president of sales Bruce Cirlin reported Monday. Many orders are pending. Complete Fleet/Maplecrest is the second largest dealer of Ford/Lincoln livery vehicles in the nation].

Lincoln had hinted as far back as 2007 that it would replace the Town Car sedan, which for two decades was the top-selling limousine livery vehicle in the U.S. and considered the iconic workhorse of the chauffeured transportation industry.

Towne Livery commercial sales manager David Bastian received the vehicles on Saturday morning between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m., making sure to take pictures and shoot a quick video marking the historic occasion. Towne Livery is the U.S. Lincoln livery dealership located closest to the Ford plant across the Canadian border where the MKTs are built.

From the Towne lot, two of the four vehicles will be trucked to Prime Executive Service Inc. in Chantilly, Va., where operator Umar Hayat expects delivery Tuesday, March 20. Towne Livery will be delivering the other two to limousine operations in the Northern Virginia/Washington, D.C. metro area this week.

Bastian took one of them for a test drive Saturday and noticed several minor detail benefits to the perfected Job 1 version. Bastian said they illustrate Ford's meticulous attention to every aspect of the vehicle up through the final stages of production:

  • The steering wheel is extra padded and comfortable.
  • The rear seat center console has a clock and looks impressive when lit up.
  • Vanity mirrors drop down in the back.
  • Driver’s seat and second-row passenger seats are very comfortable.

“I drove it for the first time and it’s phenomenal,” Bastian said. “What surprised me was the spirited V-6 engine. It’s extremely quiet and it handled great when I took it on the thruway and local roads.”

Bastian plans to receive more MKTs this week along with Bill Cunnigham, the general manager of Acton Fleet Sales in Acton, Mass., considered the top Lincoln livery dealer in the U.S. Cunningham actually sold 2013 Lincoln MKT Town Car “Car No. 1” to Tiffany Coach Works in Perris, Calif., and “Car No. 2” to Krystal Enterprises in Brea, Calif. Both major coachbuilders plan to stretch their first MKTs into limousines.

LCT will have continuing coverage this week of the historic arrival of the Lincoln MKT Town Car to dealerships and limousine operators.
