EL CAJON, Calif. — A vehicle technology company has arranged an exclusive deal with Michelin to supply the chauffeured transportation industry with limousine tires that have been hard to find since last summer.

American Motor Products, which bills itself as a clean technology company for automotive fleets, has responded to a tire shortage among limousine operators that was first reported in the Aug. 3, 2011 edition of LCT E-News. Under exclusive arrangement with Michelin, AMProd has a supply of about 400 tires available in stock, with a limited run production planned every few months.

“We heard about the shortage from our friends in the limo associations and were able to make a connection with Michelin to get these tires produced,” said Dave Ward, AMProd executive vice president and chief of business development. “Hopefully, the limo owners will respond and order them so we can keep the production going.”

Orders are filled through national distribution centers, and delivery is free in most cities. “We have priced these very competitively, even though prices have risen over the last year, and they are rare to get,” Ward said.

The average price for one tire is $189.11. Ward advised that prices may vary from month to month based on the commodity costs of rubber.

Much to the relief of limousine operators nationwide, the highly desirable Michelin Energy LX4 series tires are available once again since last summer.

The specific Michelin tires which had no longer been available, now available through AMProd are:

  • Energy LX4  245/60R/17 108T reinforced: For 2003-2011 MY Lincoln Town Car limousine stretch.
  • Symmetry  P225/70R/16  107T reinforced: For 1998-2002 MY Lincoln Town Car limousine stretch.

AMProd also has available at competitive prices with free delivery:

  • Energy LX4/P225/60R/17: For 2003-2011 MY Lincoln Town Car Executive and Executive L, load rating 98T
  • Energy LX4/P225/60R/16: For 1998-2002 MY Lincoln Town Car Executive and Executive L, load rating 98T

Ward told LCT that Michelin started making the tires again in December. This week alone, AMProd was fulfilling orders for two sets of tires to a New Jersey operator, two sets to a limousine company in North Carolina, and four sets to a customer in Baltimore, Md. The arrangement with Michelin is exclusive to AmProd and can remain in place as long as there is demand from limousine operators.

AmProd has the flexibility to raise or lower tire stocks in response to varying demand. The tires are available through AmProd’s regional-based distribution network and can be trucked to any customer within a few days.

A spokeswoman for Michelin North America was not available for comment. [LCT will update this article with Michelin information as warranted].
