CHICAGO – With the chauffeured transportation industry moving toward bigger vehicles such as vans, minibuses and motorcoaches, the traditional bus scene is evolving to meet more diverse demands among operators.

TEMSA Global debuted the TS30, now a concept vehicle for the European market that will be America’s smallest integral motorcoach. It is 30-feet long, 95 inches wide, and features a frameless monocoque chassis in stainless steel with a rear engine and independent front suspension. The engine is a Cummins that runs through an Allison transmission. The model on the show floor had 37 seats, but TEMSA business development director Omer Sozutek said the number of seats will be reduced to 32-36 in the American version to provide more legroom for passengers. Sozutek said operators will be able to get up to 84 months financing on the TS30.

Krystal's new K36, built on a Ford F-650 chassis
Krystal Infinity showed a pair of new vehicles – the highly-anticipated EVolution electric bus and its new F-650 shuttle bus, the K36. The EVolution is featured in the Sept/Oct issue of LCT. The K36 is built on a Ford F-650 XLT cab and chassis and features frameless touring windows, upgraded air conditioning system, high back reclining seats with arm rests, OEM air ride suspension, front overhead view window, LCD TV system, and overhead storage racks. It comes standard with seating for 31 passengers.
Also on hand with a new vehicle was ROUSH CleanTech, which unveiled the Flint Mass Transportation Authority’s first propane autogas paratransit vehicle to be in service by October. While this vehicle may not be of immediate interest to the industry, this is an important step in the advancement of liquid injection propane technology toward other platforms. Operators may be more interested in the Ford E-150, E-250 and E-350 passenger vans that ROUSH has equipped with propane autogas fuel systems.

Todd Mouw,vice president of ROUSH CleanTech, told LCT that the company plans to incorporate propane fuel systems to more platforms including sedans. He also said that within the next 24 months we would see a propane fuel system option for the Lincoln MKT Town Car. Propane autogas burns cleaner in engines than conventional vehicles, offering the potential for longer engine life. It is American made and typically can be purchased for 40% less than gasoline, helping operators minimize operation costs without sacrificing vehicle performance.
An exhibit that was particularly busy belonged to Turtle Top, which showcased its all-black Terra Transport XLT and F550 Odyssey XL buses. Vice President Phil Tom explained that the paint on the vehicles was a new water-based paint that came with a 5-year warranty. “We aim to design our vehicles around clients’ needs,” he said. The Terra Transport XLT has an MSRP of $74,999 and can be financed for 60 months at 5.5% for $1,434. The F550 Odyssey XL has an MSRP of $121,500 and can be financed for 60 months at 5.5% for $2,324.
