DEARBORN, MI — Starting with its Lincoln Town Car limousine packages for the 2010 model year, Ford Motor Co. is building all chassis with long-form rear passenger doors.
The limousines will now have the same standard long-form doors as the Executive L Town Cars, which are built six inches longer than the standard non-livery Town Car model. Production of the longer-door limousine vehicle packages started in September.
Leading coachbuilders, such as Krystal Enterprises Inc. of Brea, CA, for example, are marketing 2010 model Town Car limousines with the extra six inches in the body as an equivalent 78”, 106”, and 126” stretch. The longer doors give clients the same ease of entry and exit as the doors on an Executive L Town Car. The Town Car Livery package was converted to long-door only versions with MY 2008.
Ford decided to make the longer doors standard on its stretch limousine packages due to operator and chauffeured customer demand, said Jim Murray, QVM supervisor for Ford’s limousine and livery division. “We wanted to give the customers more of the experience that they appreciate from an OEM [original equipment manufacturer] standpoint,” Murray said. “Some coachbuilders were putting long doors on.”
From a production standpoint, it is more efficient for Ford to build stretch limousine chassis with the long door only, instead of both the standard and long door versions, Murray said.
The non-livery version of the 2010 Lincoln Town Car still has standard length doors.
The 2010 Lincoln Town Car Executive L is flex fuel, capable of using unleaded gasoline and E-85 ethanol.
Ford Motor Co. said this year that the Lincoln Town Car will be continued through MY 2011. Jeff Nichols, Ford’s limousine and livery manager, said at the LCT Eastern Conference last month that Ford will be able to communicate more about the future of the Town Car in the fall of 2010.
